Summer Landscaping Tips and Tricks

SummerLandscapingTipsAndTricks.jpgThere are summer landscaping tips that can help you keep your property looking its best and also increase the value of your home. Looks are important, but you also have to consider maintenance and affordability. The right materials and design are both factors that will determine how well your project turns out. With a little ingenuity, you can create the perfect backyard paradise on a shoestring budget.

Design Wisely

When you choose how and where you want to start landscaping, the next step will be to design the area. Even if you only have a small amount of space, you can still create a design that accentuates your property and adds visual appeal. Make the area look larger by placing taller plants towards the back and shorter ones near the outside edge. Add a few hanging plants or baskets to set things off. It is important to remember that landscaping does not always have to be about plants. Hardscaping can add character and beauty to any area. Pavers, benches, stone walkways and built in firepits and barbecues can all be part of the design.

Choose Plants for Your Climate

Choose the right plants for your area. If you live in an area where drought conditions are common, choose plants that thrive on minimal amounts of water. Be mindful of the temperatures as well. Certain plants do not do well in extreme temperatures. A good example of this is cactus or succulent plants. They thrive in areas known for high temperatures and low precipitation. Roses and other flowering bushes, however, do not do well at all in extreme cold or heat and require a modest amount of water to maintain their blooms and level of fragrance.

Create a Focal Point

Create a focal point that stands out and catches a person's eye. A small fountain that is offset to one side that feeds into a small pond is a nice touch if you have an abundance of green, exotic plants. Add a statue or a decorative trellis, anything that will hold the attention of the viewer long enough for them to take in what they are seeing.

Add Different Elements

Add different elements that are unique to your personality and the character of your home. If you want to add a fountain, there are several types to choose from. You can choose a small fish pond or you can choose a cascading fountain that offers both visual appeal as well as the sound of water flowing over rocks. Wind chimes are also a nice touch. If you want to attract birds or butterflies, add the types of flowers and foliage that attracts them and then include small birdhouses or other things they would enjoy.

Light it Up!

One of the most important tricks you can use when creating a landscaped area is lighting. Spotlights can be placed along the edge to highlight certain areas or back lighting can be used to provide a certain ambiance. When placed just right, the lights can also add secure to a home. Choosing to put lights in landscaped areas helps to keep the property well lit and will deter burglars or home invaders from attempting to find a way in. Your insurance company may also offer you a discount on your premium.
