Understanding PFAS in Artificial Turf

At Heavenly Greens, we are committed to providing safe, high-quality artificial turf while prioritizing environmental responsibility. If you have any questions about PFAS in our products, feel free to contact us.

What are PFAS?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals that have been used in consumer and commercial products for over eight decades. PFAS are commonly found in nonstick cookware, waterproof clothing, prescription medications, and even dental floss (Source: ATSDR).

PFAS have gained significant attention due to their persistence in the environment, earning them the nickname “forever chemicals.” They break down very slowly and accumulate in soil, water, and living organisms. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, 45% of tap water sources contain detectable levels of PFAS (Source: USGS), leading to stricter regulatory standards set by the EPA (Source: EPA).

PFAS and Artificial Turf

Artificial turf has been scrutinized as a potential source of PFAS exposure. However, studies show that synthetic turf contains significantly lower PFAS levels than many common household products. For example:

Dental Floss - Up to 248, 900 ppm
Prescription Medication – Up to 50,000 ppm
Makeup – Up to 6,000 ppm
Artificial Turf – Less than 100 ppm

Additionally, even natural grass treated with fertilizers contains measurable amounts of PFAS (Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel).

What Heavenly Greens is Doing About PFAS

At Heavenly Greens, we take concerns about PFAS seriously. That’s why we have proactively removed added PFAS from our turf manufacturing process. Our artificial grass products now meet the highest standards of safety and environmental responsibility.

  • No Added PFAS – Our synthetic turf is developed without intentionally using PFAS in the manufacturing process, ensuring a safer and cleaner surface for your home or business.
  • Safer, Cleaner Turf – By eliminating PFAS from our turf fibers and backing, we provide a safer surface for families, pets, and communities.
  • Ongoing Innovation – We continuously research and implement alternative materials to ensure our products remain environmentally responsible while maintaining top-tier performance.

The Truth About PFAS

While efforts to reduce PFAS exposure are essential, it’s important to recognize that these chemicals are widespread in many everyday products. If regulations target synthetic turf, other common items such as rain gear, nonstick cookware, and prescription drugs would also need to be reconsidered.

At less than 100 ppm, artificial turf has a significantly lower PFAS content than many household products. Even natural grass fertilized with PFAS-containing products can contribute to PFAS accumulation in the environment (Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel).

What You Can Do if You’re Concerned About PFAS

If you want to take steps to limit your exposure to PFAS, consider the following actions:

  • Check Your Local Water Supply – Many municipal water supplies have tested for PFAS levels. Check your area’s results here.
  • Avoid Fertilizing Your Lawn – Fertilizers have been shown to contribute to PFAS levels in natural grass (Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel).
  • Choose No-Added PFAS Products – Look for products labeled as “no added PFAS,” meaning the manufacturer has intentionally avoided these chemicals during production.
  • Demand Transparency – Ask companies about their PFAS policies and encourage them to eliminate PFAS where possible.
