California Drought- A State of Emergency: Tips to Reduce Water Consumption

describe the imageCalifornia drought conditions call for drastic measures on behalf of both homeowners and business owners alike. Water conservation is extremely important and is a responsibility that must be shared equally by everyone involved. The key to better conserving water, is understanding how it is wasted.

Top 5 Water Drains

The current California drought affects millions of people. Large cities use massive amounts of water on an hourly basis placing a major strain on local water supplies. The top five water drains include:

  • Lawn care and maintenance

  • Swimming pools

  • Car washes and detail centers

  • Cleaning companies

  • High rise office buildings

Water can be conserved in several ways within each of the five categories. Although it is unrealistic to expect individuals involved in each to completely discontinue their use of water, forcing them to comply with state and federal conditions that are put in place during drought conditions is not unreasonable.

Mandatory conservation is a priority when water is needed for survival. With the new water conservation laws recently implemented due to the current California drought conditions, both individuals and companies are banding together to help make sure everyone complies. Homeowners are encouraged to turn their neighbors into local authorities for watering their lawns or washing their cars. Employees are being urged to turn in their co-workers when they notice them wasting water.

For all of the resentment and irritation that is being caused, the conservation of local resources for the good of all California citizens is outweighing the individuals rights of citizens to use water in any way they choose. While a person's right to happiness is alienable according to the U.S. Constitution, their right to water for survival is sacred. The importance of water for a person's basic survival, far outweighs its use for recreation.

Ways to Conserve Water

There are several ways to conserve water. Taking your car to be washed rather than doing it yourself is just one small way homeowners can assist in the conservation efforts. Another way home and business owners can make a dramatic impact is to install artificial turf in their lawns. Natural grass requires frequent watering and extensive measures to keep it looking green, vibrant and beautiful, while artificial turf requires little to none of these.

Artificial turf offers a host of benefits that both home and business owners can relate to:

  • Cost effective – no mowing, trimming, weeding, re-seeding or watering

  • Stays green all year long – does not wither or burn in excessive heat and no bare spots from levels of traffic

  • Can be used anywhere for a variety of purposes

Artificial grass is proving to be a great asset for all who choose to install it. Rain or shine, summer or winter, it remains green and keeps properties looking their best without a lot of extra care and maintenance. The use of artificial turf is also being used to raise home values. Homeowners who install artificial turf over the majority of their lawn or create recreational areas such as backyard putting greens, can dramatically increase the resale value of their home. By reducing the home's overall upkeep and maintenance costs, it becomes more attractive to new home buyers who are looking for convenience and affordability.

During California drought conditions, everyone must do their part. Individuals who work within large office complexes or high rise office buildings must remember to turn off water when it isn't in use and be considerate of others who also need access to water. Being aware of others' needs and be mindful of your own usage habits will help to keep you on track when using water wisely.
