Ways That Artificial Turf Can Improve Your Yard

describe the imageArtificial turf is beneficial in many ways. Many homeowners are considering the switch from natural grass to synthetic grass because of the overall improvement it offers. Synthetic grass can be expensive but when compared to the minimal amount of maintenance required and the ways in which it can improve a lawn, the extra cost is worth it.

Enhances the Overall Look

While natural grass can fluctuate in color and texture along with the weather, synthetic grass stays vibrant green all year long. It doesn't need constant watering, mowing or trimming to make it look good. The look and height of the grass remains consistent at all times and there is minimal to zero maintenance required to keep it looking its best. The only maintenance that must be performed on a regular basis is picking up small twigs and bits of debris that fall from trees or weeds that can pop-up near the perimeter of the installation. Typically these weeds are carried by the wind. The overall look of the property remains pristine without having to do any of the following to keep it that way:

  • Mowing

  • Watering

  • Weeding

  • Trimming

  • Fertilizing

The only thing a homeowner really needs to do is to pick up various pieces of debris that may eventually litter the lawn after a heavy storm or forceful wind.

Eliminates Standing Water

When artificial turf is installed, 3 inches of your soil is removed, leveled and then filled back up base material before the final layer of turf is installed. Base material actually becomes the drainage portion of the yard. This eliminates dips and valleys that can result in standing water after a heavy rain.  Not only does it prevent standing water, it reduces the nesting abilities of mosquitoes and other insects that breed near water.

Doesn't Wear or Turn Brown

Artificial turf is evergreen. It will not go dormant and turn brown or fade during drought conditions. As natural grass begins to grow dormant, and loose its consistency of green color synthetic grass does not nor will it wear or fade after being in direct sunlight. It is engineered to withstand both hot and cold temperature extremes without breaking down or becoming damaged.

No Harsh Chemical Fertilizers or Herbicides

With synthetic grass, it is virtually impossible for weeds to penetrate the ground cover and the layer of synthetic turf. With no weeds to worry about there is little need for harsh chemical herbicides. Because the grass does not grow, there is also no need for fertilizers to be applied. Natural grass lawns that must have fertilizers and herbicides applied must be avoided for several hours after their application. This can be difficult for homeowners who have children and pets that want to play outside.

Raises the Resale Value of the Home

Artificial turf is a valuable asset for any home. The cost of installing artificial grass is considered an investment by many homeowners. Artificial grass is costly compared to natural grass, but the money saved from not having to water, mow, trim, or fertilize will pay for the additional cost several times over the life of the lawn. A lawn made of artificial turf can last for 15 to 20 years with proper care. The life of the grass compared to its purchase price and minimal maintenance cost makes it well worth the investment. If the homeowner decides to sell the residence, their selling price can be set to reflect the added value of the synthetic grass.
