Creating a landscaped area does not have to be extremely expensive. You can create a beautiful patio/deck area without spending an arm and a leg. A few simple ideas can boost your budget, allowing you to customize your landscaping to suit both your needs and your mood.
Install Timers
Timers can be installed to operate irrigation and lighting systems. They can be used to turn each system on at the most convenient times. Irrigation systems can be turned on when the area will not be used. Lighting systems can be set to turn on at dusk and off at daybreak, providing accent and security lighting. Timers turn things on and off and prevent excessive use of electricity and water resources.
Include Drought Resistant Plants
Drought resistant plants and decorative grasses can be used as filler or to create a backdrop for other plants. They require much less water and thrive in direct sunlight and intense heat. Drought resistant plants are ideal in areas where water usage is strictly regulated. Succulents are just one type of drought tolerant plant that is becoming increasingly popular. Along with decorative Oriental grasses and flowering bushes, they are used extensively in many areas of southern California.
Irrigate and Fertilize at the Same Time
Instead of irrigating and fertilizing your landscaped areas separately, use fertilizers that can be distributed through your irrigation system. This cuts in half the amount of water needed to distribute the fertilizer and irrigate your garden. If you use stored rainwater, you can cut back your water costs even further.
Collect Rainwater
Use various receptacles to collect and store rainwater. By saving rainwater, you reduce the amount of water you need to use from the faucet or hose. Many irrigation systems can be primed to run off of reservoirs or barrels that contain stored rainwater. Rainwater is sustainable and does not impact the water levels in aquifers, lakes and ponds.
Build a Cabana or Gazebo
If you don't want your patio or deck to be attached to your home, you can always build a freestanding gazebo or cabana. Cabanas can be made with PVC piping, canvas and mesh netting. Many gazebo designs can be made using pallets and other inexpensive building materials. Both cabanas and gazebos provide shade and offer a nice sized area to relax and spend quiet time with family or friends.

Cement pavers can be used instead of bricks to create walkways, plant boxes, patio floors and edging. Pavers can be found in several sizes, shapes and colors to create almost any type of design Pavers can be used to create stepping stones or elaborate paths through lawns or landscaped gardens, allowing easy access to areas that may need occasional maintenance.
Plant Ground Cover
If you want to keep your ground and landscaped area looking green and vibrant, plant a hardy ground cover. One of the amazing things about ground covers is that they spread rapidly and you only need a few starts per foot to establish a rich, lush bed of soft green ground cover. A small section of ground cover can be started in a corner of the area to be landscaped and, if given enough time, will eventually fill in the entire area.
Use Salvaged Materials
One of the fastest growing trends in landscaping and gardening is the use of salvaged materials. The rustic look they offer is in drastic contrast to many of the newer, more modern features of today's homes. Salvaged items can be found at yard sales, on Craigslist and even along the curb. People who like the look of vintage and antique items, will often make them the centerpiece of a landscaped area giving it a unique character.
