Why Artificial Turf and Sports Play So Well Together

WhyArtificialTurfandSportsPlaySoWellTogether1Artificial turf provides the perfect surface for many types of sports and recreational activities. Not only is it cost effective and low maintenance, it has a variety of benefits that make it a wise choice over a natural grass playing field. Artificial turf is nothing new to sports. It was used in the 1960's for indoor sporting arenas and football fields.

Durability

Synthetic turf is extremely durable and highly resistant to constant foot traffic. During a sporting event, players are constantly running, pivoting and falling on the surface of the turf. This could spell disaster for natural grass. Real grass can be torn away from the sod leaving bare patches and divots in the ground that can lead to tripping. When natural grass is worn away, it can take weeks before new seed takes root. During that time, the field cannot be used and must be cared for every day to ensure proper irrigation and growth of the seedlings.

Uniform Look at all Times

Artificial turf looks uniform and stays at the same level without any type of care or maintenance. Natural grass can change color, ranging from a bright, vibrant green to a dull brown depending on the weather. Synthetic grass keeps the same color at all times without being watered or fertilized. The blades of grass also stay the same and hold their texture no matter what the temperature or environmental conditions.

Mowing and trimming natural grass can result in uneven blade length that can disrupt play. With artificial turf, each blade is measured to be 1.5 to 2.5 (approximately) in length. The entire surface is cut to one uniform length so each athlete's performance can be maximized while playing on artificial turf. Different sports use different blade lengths to ensure sufficient ball play. The length of the blades is also important when it comes to running, walking, and maneuvering on the surface.

Bacteria Resistant

Studies have proven that bacteria cannot thrive on an artificial turf surface. Many artificial turf products have an anti-bacterial coating that prohibits bacteria growth. Players who receive cuts and abrasions during a game should always thoroughly clean the wound as soon as possible, but in most cases, little bacteria will be picked up from the turf itself.

Environmentally Sound

Artificial turf is also environmentally friendly. It does not need to be watered or treated with hazardous chemicals to keep it looking green and weed free. Water savings alone can be calculated in hundreds of thousands of gallons each year. When the amount is added up over the years the turf will remain in place, the numbers are astounding. Large playing fields require massive amounts of water when covered in natural grass. In states like California where drought conditions often result in water restrictions, playing fields cannot be watered on a regular basis or the owners will face hefty fines and legal fees.

Outdoor playing fields must also be regularly treated to prevent weeds and ensure sufficient grass growth. Fertilizers and herbicides can be extremely toxic to the environment, especially in the levels needed to maintain an athletic playing field. Run off can be carried away from the field into nearby streams and ditches, polluting water for several miles in any direction. With artificial turf, no chemicals are needed to ensure adequate thickness or uniform color. No herbicides need to be used to control weeds.

Even though convenience and cost are two of the most important reasons team owner choose to use artificial turf, the other benefits it offers are sound and will often sway even the most skeptical of users. The fact that fake grass is relatively maintenance and free is a bonus. Team owners can take great pride in a field covered with artificial grass because of its constantly uniform and well-kept look.
