Evolutions in Synthetic Grass

Napa Valley Lawn with Synthetic GrassSynthetic turf, also called artificial grass, has been around for quite some time.  While nowadays it is used for putting greens and as dog park grass, it was originally created to help urban youth.  The current popularity of artificial grass has developed out of the green movement and the desire for homeowners to cut down on their water bills. Keep reading to learn more about the original use and reason for the creation of artificial turf.

Original Creation

The first artificial turf was created through a partnership between the Ford Foundation and the Chemstrand Company.  In the late 1950s, the Ford Foundation noticed a significant decrease in fitness level among urban youth.  Therefore, they sought out a partnership with the carpet manufacturing company, Chemstrand.  Together they created the first synthetic turf playing fields for the enjoyment and health of urban youth.

Astroturf

In the mid-1960s, other industries started to take an interest in synthetic turf.  One of the major artificial grass purchasers was sport stadiums. The first major installation of the artificial turf occurred at Houston’s Astro Stadium, which is where this synthetic turf gained its name.

Modern Artificial Grass

The cost-effective benefits of artificial grass have led to more developments, and now the turf is more advanced than its predecessors. The newer artificial grass looks more real and lasts longer.  From putting greens to playgrounds, keep an eye out for new artificial grass installations in your community.
