What is Your Experience with Artificial Turf Playing Fields?

Are you a fan of local parks and recreation in the San Francisco Bay Area? Has your Planning Commission voted for synthetic grass?

Sports participants and their families see the problems first hand: fields closed for grass re-growth or on certain times or days of the week. Muddy or wet fields and gopher holes can make fields unplayable or unsafe. Overuse can cause fields to be closed and unavailable.

Soccer, football, baseball, softball and lacrosse players often favor artificial grass simply because it is available for play under even severe weather conditions.

For the City, a 2004 study found that there were simply not enough fields for all the kids who wanted to play.

Parks and recreation staff like that artificial turf is playable all the time, you don't have to repair it as often or keep people off of it to avoid overuse.

Natural grass has downsides, such as the need for fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides, plus more ongoing maintenance.

Recreation and Park Commission staff struggle with budget and field availability issues. Artificial turf installation provides savings in ongoing maintenance expense, labor hours, equipment, repair, chemicals and water.

Advocates for artificial turf fields include the City Fields Foundation, which was founded to remedy a chronic shortage of fields so that every child might play.

San Franciso has several projects completed or in the works, including the following that benefited from the involvement of the City Fields Foundation:

  • Mission Playground,
  • Kimbell Playground,
  • Crocker Amazon Playground,
  • South Sunset Playground,
  • Franklin Square,
  • Silver Terrace Playground, and
  • Garfield Square.

For citizens of San Francisco, the key benefits as stated by the foundation, have been:

"By renovating the playfields at our first six neighborhood parks and by overhauling the system of reserving fields for team play, we have brought more than 76,000 additional hours of annual play time to the city's athletic fields. That extra playtime has resulted in 200 new youth sports teams with 2,400 more San Francisco kids playing ball each year!"
