Artificial Lawns: Eco-Friendly Materials in Lawns and High Fashion

artificial lawnsFrom food to fashion to home decor and more, the emphasis is on sustainability and environmental responsibility. Farm-to-table dinners showcase local organic produce; eco-clothing lines boast organic cotton, gently harvested wool, natural dyes and tagua nut buttons; green home design ranges from super-insulated, low energy “passive” structures to low- or no-VOC paints to hardwood furniture, bamboo flooring, and hemp, cotton, jute, linen and silk upholstery fabrics.

On the surface, sustainable style seems to call for heavy use of natural resources. But take a few minutes to really think about that. Sometimes, isn’t it more environmentally responsible to go with the faux? Vegan shoes. Faux-leather motorcycle jackets and faux-fur accessories. Fabrics and furnishings made from recycled plastic bottles.

As new technologies allow the production of synthetic and recycle materials that are more refined, they are finding their way into more high-end products. Think about designers like Stella McCartney and celebrities like Natalie Portman, both of whom are high-profile faux proponents. Not only are many synthetic materials better for the environment, they are often safer, more durable, easier to care for and more functional.

When was the last time you bought workout wear made of cotton instead of high-tech wicking fabrics?

Which leads me, of course, to the eco-friendly properties of synthetic lawns. Many artificial turf grasses incorporate recycled plastics and tires, which helps reduce the volume of landfills. Synthetic lawns don’t need chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers to stay insect-free and lush. Faux lawns don’t contain pollen and other allergens.

By virtually eliminating outdoor watering, artificial grass water waste and runoff contamination, faux grass is much safer for the environment than natural grass. And like Stella McCartney’s haute couture collections, it looks exceptionally stylish (but costs a lot less and lasts a lot longer!).

Artificial Grass surfaces are eco-friendly, cheap, and stylish. If you would like to get more information on how an Artificial lawn can save you time and money, check out our Heavenly Greens Blog
