DIY Artificial Turf Projects

DIY Artificial Turf Projects http://www.heavenlygreens.com/blog/diy-artificial-turf-projects @heavenlygreensArtificial turf isn't just for converting natural grass lawns into maintenance free, ever green meadows. Synthetic turf has any number of uses that make it both functional and convenient. If you are looking for ways to “green up” your living area, the following ideas can make artificial turf one of the most popular decorating materials around your home.

Table Decorations

If you are having a backyard barbecue or a Monday night football party, you can add some authentic flair to the tables by adding artificial turf. Artificial turf can be cut into long strips, approximately 8 to 10 inches wide and used for runners down the center of the table. Serving dishes and centerpieces can be placed on it without fear of damaging the surface of the table. Placemats and coasters can also be made out of artificial turf that is cut to the right size.

Upholstery

Pillows, seat and bench covers can be created using artificial turf. The mesh, fabric backing can be easily stitched together to form seams. While this may seem an uncommon use, artificial turf is extremely durable and when used as upholstery does not have to be taken in or protected from direct sunlight and the weather.

Pathways and Accent Areas

In areas where inorganic mulch or stone has been used to create landscaped areas, artificial turf can be cut to form pathways or stepping stones. This will add a touch of color to the area and will make it easier to walk on if you decide to perform any type of maintenance or clear away debris. Stepping pads can also be used along pools, patios and decks to prevent slipping or sliding if the cement becomes wet.

Numbers and Letters

For an added touch of green to any home or lawn, you can cut both numbers and letters out of artificial turf. You can spell your last name and include it in a landscaped area of the lawn or you can cut your house number out of artificial turf. The numbers can be attached to the side of the home or to another surface large enough to accommodate them. They will stand out nicely against light colored back grounds and add a bit of texture to the exterior of the home.

Step/Stair Strips

Long strips can be cut from artificial turf and applied to steps and stairs both inside and outside of the home. The grassy texture will reduce slipping and prevent your feet from sliding around on the surface of the step if it is wet or snowy outside. It is also beneficial for stair surfaces inside the home if your feet are wet from outside or from having mopped across a freshly cleaned floor.

Game Boards and Recreational Areas

If you have a large enough area in your yard, you may want to use different shades of artificial turf to create a favorite game board. Tic tac toe, hopscotch or a simple board game is easily made and will offer hours of fun for adults and children alike. Lawn paint can be used to mark boundaries and add numbers or whatever each game calls for. Putting greens are also easily created if you have an avid golfer who wants to practice their strokes at home instead of the golf course.

Door Mats and Shoe/Boot Rests

If you have children, teens or even adults who have a nasty habit of trying to enter the home with muddy boots or shoes, create door mats or shoe/boot rests using artificial turf. Wet muddy shoes and boots can be placed on the artificial turf and left to dry. Not only will the dirt remain on the turf, it can be easily removed by picking up the mat and shaking it off the side of the porch.
