Is an Artificial Grass Deodorizer Necessary?
An artificial grass deodorizer isn't really necessary if you don't mind the possibility of odors from pet waste wafting in your windows or taking over your back lawn. If you are particular about how you maintain your lawn, remove pet waste quickly and hose the area down every few days to rinse away any urine associated residues, you may not have much to worry about when it comes to odor. The fact is, however, that over time, something will eventually be left behind. Even a small amount can cause the bacteria to take hold. Zeolite works by absorbing moisture, including pet urine and other types of moisture, such as drippings from air conditioning units and rain gutters. Over time, moisture and bacteria will eventually begin to produce some type of odor producing bacteria. Sprinkling infill or other types of material that contain Zeolite particles can help to keep odors knocked down and moisture under control.
Powder Deodorizers
Powder deodorizers can be somewhat messy, but in the end will eventually work to eliminate odors that can develop deep into the layers of the artificial turf. The lightness of the powder allows it to work its way deep down into the turf, but that same benefit can also cause it to be blown away before it has the ability to work. If you choose to use powder forms of deodorizers, sprinkle them liberally on the area where the odors are present. Even if some eventually is blown off, there will still be enough to effectively deodorize the area.
Keep the Area Clean!
The simplest way to control odors in any situation is to keep the area clean and free of debris. Using a hose to dilute and rinse away pet urine and the material residue after pet feces has been removed from the area. While most people think of pets being the main cause of odor, residue from rain gutter over flow and air conditioning leaks can result in moisture. Moisture can lead to mold and mildew both of which produce musty odors. Rinsing these areas frequently or sprinkling them with baking soda may help to take the edge off of the murky smell.
