The Ideal California Yard Is Redefined As Drought Continues

Written by Troy Scott | 10 December

Severe drought conditions in the state of California have had many homeowners debating on what to do with their lawns to keep them from looking dry and uncared for. Even HOA's are having to rethink their requirements on membership. Water restrictions are making it increasingly difficult to maintain a tradition, natural grass lawn. Homeowners have many different options available to them. They can mix or match any of them to create almost any mood or ambiance they are looking for.

Artificial Turf

Natural grass lawns require hours of maintenance each week and are becoming increasingly more difficult to maintain with water restrictions imposed by state and local governments. The drought has created a dilemma between homeowners and their HOA's. For years HOA's prohibited the use of artificial turf, but with the no end in sight to the drought, many have relented and are now letting homeowners install artificial turf to keep their properties looking green and lush.

Not only does artificial turf reduce the amount of time spent on maintaining the lawn, it eliminates the use of harsh herbicides and fertilizers that can eventually make their way into the local ground water supply. Artificial turf does not require water and is safe for both children and pets. With minimal care and maintenance, an artificial turf lawn can remain in place for several years saving millions of gallons of water.

Landscaping

Instead of converting their natural grass lawns to synthetic, many homeowners are choosing to landscape large areas of their property. Both organic and inorganic materials can be used, effectively saving thousands of gallons of water each year. Plant nurseries have a wide variety of drought friendly plants to choose from and will help homeowners decide on plants that work well together and provide a visually appealing garden that requires little care.

Landscaping areas around the home increase curb appeal and can actually raise a home's resale value. Small statues, tiered sections, rock formations and a wide variety of decorative plants can be used to create a one of a kind garden that reflects the personality and character of the owner of the home. Almost any type of materials can be used as a foundation. Some homeowners are choosing mulch while others prefer smaller stones and cement pavers. If the area is large enough, artificial turf pathways can be created to allow access to areas deep within the garden without tracking in yard waste.

Recreational Areas

Larger patios, decks, putting greens and game areas are becoming increasingly popular. Families who have small children, specific sports interests or like to entertain guests can turn their back lawn into a recreational paradise. Extending the patio and building a stationary barbecue pit is almost the same as adding an extra room to the house. Sports enthusiasts can build a putting green, shuffle board or bocce ball court.

Families with small children can add a play area surfaced with artificial turf and equipped with playground pieces for hours of fun and frolic. Large wooden play areas are extremely popular. They are durable and can withstand extreme changes in climate without being damaged by high winds, driving rain or dry weather. When this kind of play area is built on a property, it can raise the property value and make the home more appealing to prospective buyers that have children or grandchildren.

Drought conditions have caused both homeowners and businesses to redefine what they consider to be the ideal yard. Until the state's water supply is restored to normal standards, homeowners will have to rethink their options when it comes to lawn maintenance. Homeowners need to find ways to keep their property looking pristine without wasting water. With a little research, homeowners can discover new, environmentally friendly options to keep their yards looking nice.
