Lawn Care Tips for the Northern California Summer

It’s going to be a hot summer—can your lawn take the heat? Besides the obvious struggle with water deprivation, Northern California lawns can experience a lot of other growing pains during the summer months.

Especially if you have a busy, active family, you are looking at heavy-duty wear and tear to the lawn as a result of all the summer fun. Bald dirt patches, a shredded lawn and trampled grass may all result from a summer well spent out of doors.

So how can you take care of your lawn in the heat of the California summer sun? We’ve got a few ideas.

One of the biggest issues is a bald dirt patch. Those ugly brown patches of dirt in the middle of your lawn may result from extra wear-and-tear on the area due to pets or a regularly traversed footpath. Leaving a kiddy pool, trampoline or lawn chair in the same spot on the lawn for a long period of time may also result in adverse effects. Without enough sunshine, the grassy patch of lawn that looks so refreshing in the shade might soon become nutrient depleted. Change up the area you send your pets or children to play. Fence off heavily trafficked areas of grass to allow your lawn a chance to revive itself. Move toys, chairs, etc. around the yard every week or so; this way no one patch of grass takes the brunt of being in shadow, and your lawn will maintain an even, green quality.

Sprinklers. They can be a pain. Make sure you set your sprinklers to go off at least a couple times a week, adjusting for projected summer heat levels as needed. Set sprinkler timers to go off at dawn or dusk, so that water will have time to soak into the ground instead of sizzling away in the sun, never sinking past surface level. Don’t forget to keep an eye on your sprinklers function. Malfunctioning sprinklers can result in a host of issues for your lawn. Carefully examine them every week or two by putting them on Test Mode. Keep an eye out for muddier or dryer patches—you may have a leak or blockage. Sprinkler heads can also easily be knocked off when you or a lawn service mows the lawn.
