Building your own first aid kit is extremely easy. You can include band aids, bandages, anti-bacterial ointment, aspirin, ibuprofen, glucose tablets and a thermometer. Depending on a person's level of knowledge when it comes to first aid, a variety of other things can be included. Taking a first aid and CPR class could save lives when a natural disaster hits. Being able to provide first aid when a person is first injured helps to fight infection and can reduce further injury. A flood is one of the worst natural disasters because it generates massive amounts of bacteria. Open wounds are easily infected and can airborne bacteria can lead to a variety of upper respiratory and digestive illnesses. Stock Up On Fresh Water
Fresh water is essential for life. The massive amount of water associated with a flood is filled with bacteria, various forms of waste and toxic chemicals. It must be boiled before used and, even then, it may not be safe to use. Having several gallons of fresh or bottled water on hand will provide you with what you need to cook food and take care of basic hygiene needs. Buying bottled water and keeping it stored in its original container will avoid any risk of contamination.
Store Non-Perishable Food Items
Most people who have studied natural disasters, including El Nino type floods suggest keeping at least six months worth of non-perishable food items on hand at all times. This includes can foods, bottled juices, dried beans, different types of grains and dried meats. Food supplies must be kept as dry and secured as possible to prevent animals from getting into them. A secured food pantry or underground food cellar is ideal. The temperatures in an underground cellar remain cool and when sealed will prevent moisture from allowing mold and mildew to take over. Food supplies can also be stored in closets or rooms that can be adequately protected from the elements.
